FAQ
General
Are your products 'raw'?
Yes! We dehydrate our snacks in a dehydrator that is kept under 118F. It takes a long time but, it is worth it to keep the nutrients intact. We do NOT bake, fry, pasteurize, or do anything weird.
Is buckwheat gluten-free/is it a grain?
Buckwheat is a seed related to rhubarb and is NOT a grain, nor does it contain gluten.
It is what is called a “pseudo-grain” as it “acts like a grain” with its ability to replace wheat/barley/oats/corn/etc within foods and recipes.
But is buckwheat paleo?! My paleo guru says its not...
Of course everyone has a different way of eating and interpreting diets but, in a word, yes, buckwheat is paleo. It adheres to the general principles of the paleo diet as it is: dairy-free, gluten-free, grain-free, sugar-free, not processed, etc. If you specifically do not feel well eating it, then don’t! (That goes for any foods, paleo or not!)
Fun Fact: did you know that palaeontologists have found grains in our ancestors’ stomachs from the paleolithic era? It looks like grains were a part of certain culture’s diets for 1000s of years, among many other foodstuffs.
Are your products safe for those with nut allergies?
Our products are made in our own dedicated facility on our own equipment. We have no tree nuts or peanuts allowed within our facility, or manufacturing line. We do currently receive our ingredients from suppliers that store ingredients within a warehouse that can have both nuts and non-nut ingredients together but, everyone along the supply chain works to keep them separate with the utmost care and allergen control procedures, for which we have statements for.
Of course determining what you put in your body is ultimately up to you though.
Please Note: we do use sesame and coconut on all equipment.
Is coconut a 'nut'?
Coconuts are drupes, not nuts. In Canada, coconuts are not considered ‘tree nuts’ so, we can call our products ‘nut-free’ in our home country.
The USA considers coconut a tree nut and we label accordingly for allergen statements…
What quantifies the price for your products?
When it comes to food, you get what you pay for.
Since our products are all made by hand, in small batches, with organic, raw ingredients and superfoods, within Toronto, these don’t come cheap.
Also, because we dehydrate to maintain nutrition, this process takes between 24-36hrs per batch.
We are peeling and chopping all ingredients by hand, like you would at home, which is very labour intensive (and thus expensive).
We could also explain how certain agricultural products receive high subsidies to make them cheap (i.e. corn, beef, soy, etc) but, we won’t get all political here. We trust you can do your own research ;)
A better question, is why are other foods so cheap?!
How many pieces of product come in each package?
The product density changes by flavour and can fluctuate per batch, as everything is hand made with no machines.
Also to note, instead of focusing on quantity, we look at quality and nutrient density you receive per bag. In a comparison to “normal/processed snacks” our products are so nutrient dense, that per bite, you are getting macro and micro nutrients to feed your body, while also stabilizing blood sugar and satisfying hunger. No $2 snack chips will do that.
What does “Plastic Neutral Certified” mean on the back of your packaging?
Plastic Neutral means in a nutshell, that for every bag of our product sold, we pull an equivalent plastic bag out of the environment (hence “neutral” designation).
In more detailed terms, By going Plastic Neutral with rePurpose Global, we are dedicating a % of each product we sell to fund the removal and recovery of the same amount of plastic from nature that we use in our packaging. With Plastic Neutrality, we are proud to offer our products with a Net Zero Plastic Footprint.
On the positives, plastic is an incredibly durable and light-weight material that guarantees product quality, slashes food waste (as a result of the improved shelf life), and reduces carbon footprint in transportation compared to glass or metal. However, we recognize that as a global community, we have utterly mismanaged the plastic we do use, and that’s why we decided to take action.
Through this partnership with rePurpose Global, we are supporting CarPe in India to employ and empower marginalized waste workers to ethically reclaim and dispose of low-value plastic waste otherwise landfilled, burned, or flushed into waterways, or oceans.
Waste worker communities who work with rePurpose Global’s partner organisations form the backbone of our Plastic Neutral achievement. As you may know, millions of workers are engaged with informal recycling across cities in the developing world – from Nairboi and Rio de Janeiro to Mumbai and Jakarta, they play a crucial role in dealing with the consequences of our consumption. Despite that, their environmental work remains unsung and these marginalized communities barely earn livable wages, weather harsh working conditions, and are often stuck in a cycle of abject poverty.
Your purchase of our organic foods are helping rePurpose Global and its waste management partners to add crucial income streams for informal waste workers and their families. Through our Plastic Neutral contributions, rePurpose Global pays ethical wages to waste workers for collecting hard-to-recycle low-value plastic waste items (e.g. chips wrappers) for which they never receive compensation from the current recycling market. This way, waste workers get fairly compensated for their important work, while diverting plastic waste that would have otherwise been landfilled, burned or flushed into our oceans.
That being said, we do recognize that plastic pouches are not the best for the environment – even though it is technically recyclable, it is unlikely it happens in practice. This ties back to the fact that low-value plastics are unlikely to be recycled in the status quo because the material doesn’t fetch enough of a recycling value in the global market. By going Plastic Neutral, we are solving this problem in a systematic way – by collecting one pouch for every one we sell and financing the removal and recovery of low-value plastic, we are creating a market for these materials and building their profitability for the long run.
Why does your product and so many others in the food industry come packaged in plastic at all?
As millennials, we are concerned about plastic as much as the next person. But, as food manufacturers, we are also concerned about quality and food safety.
Unfortunately, we have not yet found a plastic substitute that would allow our product to be kept safe from pathogens, moisture and oxygen, as well as from UV, and is ACTUALLY compostable (again do your research to make sure companies are not just using bio plastics as a marketing ploy! Many don’t actually compost properly where they end up after disposal.)
On the positive side, there is a LOT of research happening in this department and we are super excited to see what solutions are created in the coming years that we can transition to.
In the meantime, also take a look at recycling partners wherever you live who could help recycle plastic pouches – every bit counts! If you are unable to find any, check out TerraCycle’s programs.

What is the best way to eat the Chocolate Covered Bananas?!
Since there are no sweeteners at ALL in the thin chocolate coating, we don’t suggest sucking on these, unless you really like a bitter start and sweet finish once you get to the banana in the centre. Don’t be a sucker, be a chewer with this one! These are best just to bite right into so the banana mixes with the unsweetened chocolate ;p You have been warned!
Why does the sugar amount seem so high in the nutrition facts table for the 'Banana Crisps’ and the “chocolate covered bananas”?
Firstly, as a holistic nutritionist founded company, we must say you should never reduce a product (or any food for that matter) to only it’s numbers in the Nutrition Facts Table. Always look at quality (aka the ingredients), over quantity (aka the nutrition facts).
Back to the sugar question: In our banana crisp items, the sugar content only comes from organic, blended bananas that we ripen and peel in house. Our flavours range in sugar content from 6g-8g/serving, or 12g-16g/bag. This comes packed with tons of fiber, protein, good fat, and micronutrients, which slows the absorption of sugar into the blood stream. This means you will not get a sugar spike, or energy crash AND you will have the benefit of feeling more satiated longer between meals (bonus!).
Same goes for our chocolate covered bananas. There are no sweeteners added to either the fruit, or the cacao/chocolate coating. All the sugars reflected in the label, are from the dehydrated bananas.
Did you know that one apple has about 22g of sugar and only 3g fiber?! Now we are not saying apples are bad, but, we are trying to make a point…
Fun Fact: did you know that nutrition facts are often not accurate anyway, where the ingredient declarations have to be. So, what would you rather base your food choices off of, ingredients, or possibly incorrect numbers?
How are your Carrot Flax Crackers ‘keto' when they have carrots? Aren’t carrot super high carb?
Yes, this product does have carrots but, because the fibre of the flax seeds are so high, it completely negates the starch/carb content naturally occurring in the carrots.
As nutritionists, we love healthy, whole complex carbs from fruit/veg but, if keto is your ‘jam’, you likely already knew this answer about how fibre works ;)
Net carbs is a simple calculation of (carbs – fibre = net carbs).
