Our favourite (honestly) clean skin care regime
There is definitely no lack of skin advice in columns and blogs these days, or ever really! We all want to look good and are often willing to slather on all sorts on potions with promises to attain clear, glowing youthful skin.
Skin issues are a huge problem but, of course topical potions can only do so much and cannot make up for poor lifestyle choices. At the end of the day, you are what you eat and if you want plump, glowing skin, a foundation of a healthy lifestyle is definitely a great start.
It is also never too early to remove the “bad products” that contain all sorts of questionable ingredients, chemicals, preservatives, and fragrances. Harsh cleansers can completely disrupt our skins bacterial balance and strip it of its naturally protective oils and barriers. Not a good look.
Did you know that skin care and non-food items are not regulated to the same extent as food is? Organic claims, natural claims, or ingredient safety claims can be thrown around, even when they are not true.
Since skin is our largest organ and absorbs contaminants and chemicals applied to it, it is wise to be mindful of everything it comes into contact with.
Note: I am not sponsored by any company, any product suggestions below, are truly what I am currently loving and have fine tuned my regime to over using oils and natural skincare for over 14 years.
My honest skincare regime:
I am super lazy with self-care, I’m low maintenance and hate any step that takes me longer than 10 mins. while getting ready in the morning. If I could just roll out of bed without even brushing my hair and head to work, that would be my dream.
So here is what this lazy, simple gal does:
1: Cleanse
- I rotate based on what my skin needs that day with either just water and a towel (yes that’s it sometimes)
- or, I may use an oil to cleanse, like jojoba, avocado, or another light oil cleanser if I am feeling extra ambitious
2: Toner
- I will spritz quick with a rose water (pure, not the fake stuff with fragrance added) like this one here.
3: Serums
- If I really want to dial it up a notch and feel all adult-like, I will use a few drops of a vitamin C serum like this one here, or a hyalauranic acid, but not all the time and certainly not twice a day. I also go easy on the hyalauranic acid and don’t use it more than twice a week. I have super sensitive skin that goes red easily and burns, does not tan.
4: Moisturize
- I love to simply use a mix of oils like jojoba, or shea in the winter but, my all-time favourite oil is from cocokind. It is so light, affordable and absorbs right into my skin without feeling heavy, or causing any sort of breakouts. Available here.
5: Sunscreen
- Although I don’t always use it (which I definitely should!!) invest in a good, holistic sun screen to apply when you go outdoors. I am currently using cockind’s sunscreen at the moment when I know I will be outside but, almost any sun protection is better than none.
Of course if you want to use the occasional clay mask, gentle exfoliator (like a sea moss one), or other serums for night treatments, go for it! I just think similar to food, sometimes less is more and can give your skin a chance to balance out its own bacterial balance, without our aggressive “modern” interventions that can sometimes do more harm than good.
Just to re-iterate again that good skin glows from the inside out and it is super important to drink enough fluids each day, overall eat real and fresh food that is packed with antioxidants and gut-healthy fibre, and exercise.
